This kettle by Ecole Nationale supérieure d’Art et de Design de Saint-Etienne graduate Estelle Sauvage uses a light bulb to heat water for a cup of tea.

The incandescent bulb is mounted on a wooden base, while the glass jug has a recess to house the bulb close to but separate from the water.

It can heat water to 90°C.

See all our stories about this year’s graduate shows »

Here’s some more information from Sauvage:

This kettle works with the heat of an incandescent light bulb 100W, which the sale is forbidden since September, 2009 (in France). and which see ending their production and their existence within homes.

So the revolutionary object finished its life sadly, demonized by the ecology.

This project  just tries to pay a kind of tribute, staging the bulb, and its death.
The kettle becomes out of order, its status of useful object crosses in a fraction of second, an object of memory, a “former” object.

It really works, it does not bring the water to the boil but to an ideal temperature for tea: approximately 85 / 90°C.

It was presented in particular to the Pompidou Center of Metz, on July 4th of this year, during the “market of design” for the event ” Imaginez maintenant “.

London designer Roger Arquer has designed this vase with a funnel protruding from the side so that the water to be changed without removing the flowers.

Called Funnel Vase, the ceramic piece will be on show at an exhibition called Translations during the London Design Festival later this month.

The information below is from Arquer:

    Funnel Vase

Funnel Vase (2010) is a ceramic flower vessel with a side opening in a funnel shape. The funnel helps to change the water without having to remove the flowers. The old water can be easily poured out through the funnel and replaced with fresh water, without a mess.

While being a very functional piece of design, Funnel Vase presents an original shape. The vessel has a gloss white glazing finish.

Funnel Vase is a challenging piece of ceramics since it’s made in one piece. The joint between the vase and the funnel holds the right angle making possible its production.

“I hope this vase will make the task of changing the water more gratifying”, says Arquer.

A piece of furniture that resembles the technique architects use for recreating the topology of a landscape. Beautiful.

Inspired in rapid prototyping processes, Mathias Bengtsson creates a beautiful piece half way between furniture and art. He first modelled the final shape of the armchair in clay, and then sliced it into two thousand layers of recycled paper coated with a thin film of glue, later assembled and glued together with pressure and heat.
The final output has the richness of forms and shadows of a textile, and the use of both white and black paper sheets donates the chair with a double face: a soft, lighter one when only the edges of the layers are visible and a stronger and somehow more agressive one when the edges do not coincide.

As part of a national campaign promoting McDonald’s restaurants, a downtown Vancouver lamppost became part of an out-of-home (OOH) optical illusion, appearing to pour coffee into a giant cup on the sidewalk. At the time, McDonald’s was giving away free small cups of its brew for a two-week period, in an effort to attract new breakfast customers. Ad firm Cossette’s Vancouver office developed the concept for a lamppost near 6th Avenue and Cambie Street. The post was wrapped in brown vinyl to resemble poured coffee, while an oversized carafe was attached to the end. Elsewhere in the city, a transit shelter was turned into an ‘hourglass,’ with an ever-diminishing number of coffee beans reminding customers of the promotion’s short-term nature.
